How often a wig needs washing depends on how frequently it is worn, for how long and the circumstances in which it is worn. Advice varies from every six occasions to up to twenty-five wears. A wig cap increases the periods between washes.

Before washing your wig, use a wig comb to remove tangles and any large items of dirt. Then immerse it in water and use your hands to swish the wig around for about five minutes. Be gentle! Do not wring or twist the wig. The wig should then be thoroughly rinsed, again in cold water.

Gently squeeze out the wig (do not squeeze tightly or wring the wig as this can misshape the wig). You should then dab the wig with a towel.

The wig is now ready for applying conditioner: to do this dab on a small amount of conditioner and gently finger through the ends. Then leave it for five minutes, before rinsing the wig again (as above).

Then place the hair on a wig stand and allow it to dry at room temperature. Do not use a polyhead as this can stretch the inside of the hair piece when the wig is wet. (A travel stand is fine.)

Using conditioner helps improve the feel, appearance and manageability of your wig. Conditioner is normally applied after washing the hair with shampoo and is applied to wet hair.

There are two types of conditioner; the first is applied and then rinsed out. The second type and be applied and left in the wig. If using the former type of conditioner, it must be thoroughly rinsed out in cold water: as with washing the wig do not wring or twist it. Dab dry with a towel and allow to air dry, ideally on a wig stand.

Conditioner should not be overused as it can lead to a build-up in the wig.

Fibre soft 'n' sheen is very important: it helps to prevent static and tangles, in longer styles, especially at the base of the neck. Spray on to the wig, and use fingers in a scrunching motion to create lovely waves in the hair.

Using fibre soft 'n' sheen will also prolong the life of your wig.
